This course also includes a mandatory night of training. \nCOURSE FORMAT: The FAST 1 course is normally taught in a 2.5 day format. Day 1 morning is lecture\, afternoon is introduction to ropes\, knots\, throw lines\, and shallow water crossing techniques. Day 2 is all day shore and in water skills with hydrology interjected. Day 2 night training begins at dusk and includes skills and techniques in dark conditions. Day 3 completes the course with the more technical systems\, survival skills\, and finish out lectures. Course hours are generally 0800-1700\, except third day which ends at 1300. \nThe person completing this course will have the knowledge and skills to decide the proper course of action in floods and swiftwater environments. This course is a pre-requisite for FAST 2 and the FAST Rescue Boat Operator courses. \nSTANDARDS: This course meets and exceeds Industry Standards and NFPA 1670 and 1006 requirements. To completely meet all NFPA requirements the Technician would need to attend the FAST R2 class. \nPPE: Each student is required to provide their own Personal Protective Gear: \n\n “USCG” approved Type III or V PFD (Type V preferred)\nWet suit boots with hard sole bottom or tennis shoes\nWater or vertical rescue helmet\nFull wet or dry suit as weather conditions dictate\nWater or abrasion protective gloves\n\nRENTAL GEAR: RTI has a limited number of gear sets of PFD and helmet for rent. First come basis. \nPHYSICAL FITNESS REQUIREMENTS: RTI field courses are strenuous in nature. RTI recommends the student be in good physical and mental condition. \nAdditional course information will be emailed to each student registered.

Day 1 morning is lecture\,. Day 1 afternoon is basic maps\, compass\, navigation\, pace count\, and search techniques.  Day 1 night training includes navigation and searchs in dark condition. Day 2 is all field work with more techniques and field missions. \nThe person completing this course will have the knowledge and skills to function as a search team member. \n\nNo prerequisite required.\nThis course is a prerequisite for GSAR 2\n\nSTANDARDS: This course meets and exceeds Industry Standards and NFPA  1006  chapter 16\, requirements. To completely meet all NFPA requirements the Technician would need to attend the GSAR 1\, 2\, 3 and Wilderness Survival 1. \nPPE: Each student is required to provide their own Personal Protective Gear: \n\n\nHiking or duty boots with ankle support\nClothing appropriate for training site (NO SHORTS)\nHeadlight and hand held lights for night training\nHiking stick\nMap Compass (Example – Stansport Deluxe @ Wal Mart $6.10)\n24 hr. SAR Pack (Sample list available from RTI) including hydration system or water bottles\ntrail mix or snacks for field work.\n\n\nPHYSICAL FITNESS REQUIREMENTS: RTI field courses are strenuous in nature. RTI recommends the student be in good physical and mental condition. There are segments of the class that are predominately in the field and require significant walking\, possibly in inclement weather.
